Key Steps to Checking the Integrity of Your OST file

Update: December 22nd, 2009

One of the main advantages of working on offline folder files in your local Outlook though your email account may be on Microsoft Exchange Server, is that you can synchronize these files with the Exchange server data from time to time. Occasionally though, this synchronization process gives rise to errors. You may also find that after you have finished synchronizing your OST file and your mailbox, there are some items go missing from either the mailbox or the OST file. At such times, it is best to carry out an integrity check on the OST file. If the OST file is corrupted or damaged, you may need to turn to a more advanced recovery tool to carry out an exchange recovery process.

When you notice errors during the synchronization process, you could use the OST Integrity Check tool to check the OST file and see what is causing the errors. This essentially means running the scanost.exe file ' this tool can only run on OST files, can be used to diagnose what is causing the problems with synchronization and can even repair some of the synchronization issues. The Integrity Check tool begins by scanning both the mailbox on the Exchange server and the local OST file. It then compares the folders in both of them and individual items within the folders. If there are any differences, it attempts to reconcile them and records the differences as well as what it has managed to resolve in a scan log. Finally if there are any situations that the tool is not able to rectify, it mentions this too in the scan log so that you can try to resolve them manually. If this tool does not help and your OST file appears truly damaged, you may need the help of more powerful recovery solutions for the exchange recovery process.

One such recovery tool is Advanced Exchange Recovery that allows you to repair the OST file so that you can recover all your data and then save them as PST files, easily readable by Outlook and other email clients. This tool can not only recover all the mail messages, appointments, contacts, meeting and task requests in the OST file but also deleted items that include all these as well as distribution lists, journals, notes and so on. Advanced Exchange Recovery can recover message properties such as subject, bcc, cc, date, etc.; attachments like documents and images and embedded objects such as Word or Excel documents. Finally, it can not only handle OST files that are fairly large in size - running up to a few terabytes ' but during the exchange recovery process, it can also split the recovered PST file, into several smaller files allowing Outlook to work faster.
